I don't normally say this but with open consideration of Love Nwantiti (Ah Ah Ah), I suggest you guys to listen to "Beggie Beggie" by Ayra Starr. It's a lovely R'N'B afrobeat song that can make you feel emotional and happy at the same time. It features Ckay, so that should be a convincing point. Did I forget to mention that she's 19 !!!! :O..... Such a beautiful voice and if you like that song stream her album "19 & Dangerous" it includes the popular song Samaritan too :)

The Motto also debuted this week and Tell It To My Heart dropped but it seems Remember and Black Magic could stay for a while

Who wants me to drop an EDM playlist filled with Christmas remakes ??

K

3

All I Want For Christmas Is You re-enters into the Top 70. The Christmas invasion has started. I didn't expect this till late November.

But on more Optimistic news, Last Christmas has also re-entered. This song was played a lot on radio last year and I got hooked to it. I don't normally bother with songs outside of the 2000's but this song got my Christmas feeling extra special and jolly last year; let's hope it can do the same this year. Plus the MATTN & Dino Warriors remake last year was dope 😁😁

the christmas takeover begins… i wonder if all i want for christmas is you could go back to number 1? other than that, it’s GREAT to see kali uchis and summer walker - two underrated female artists ive been rooting for - debut in the top 40. the rise for seventeen going under is really unexpected, not complaining though as it’s still great - it kinda cooled off on me, but i still really like it. better days is another song that deserves to be a hit leading into 2022. do it to it though, absolutely stinks and it’s one of the most sinister and annoying hits i’ve heard all year. might rival talk about and without you to be my worst song of 2021 at this point!

as for travis scott, the astroworld incident is a story for another day, but i’m gonna say i’m devastated by the situation for now. mafia > escape plan, but i love both. they’ve both been on repeat for me since they dropped.

also, happy red day! ❤️

The Christmas songs seem to be re-entering earlier & earlier each year, don’t they? 😂

Mid-November might be a bit early for me to start getting into the festive spirit just yet, but when the classics from Mariah & WHAM! are as iconic as they are, I’m more than happy to see them already back in the charts. :)

ATM, Bad Habits. I doubt it'll fall but I'm so sick of it. I also hate Coming For You. they are the worst tracks in the chart in my opinion, along with the new Travis Scott and Summer Walker songs. I don't like Travis's music in general and I found Summer's tracks boring!

Agreed on 'Coming For You' & 'Bad Habits' (although for different reasons), I liked one Travis song but didn't like the other, while Summer is very underrated in my opinion. :)

WEEKLY CHART REVIEW (11/11/2021 – 17/11/2021)

🔴 (Negative)

1) ‘Coming For You’ went up a few places! Honestly, I’m just more disappointed than I am angry at this point. Thankfully, there’ll be a huge surge in holiday music soon which will hopefully kill of the momentum for this before it gets any kind of run inside the Top 10! Unfortunately, I get the feeling that it might have a second wind as we go into 2022, but that’s a bridge we’ll cross when we come to it.

2) ‘Mafia’ sneaked in as the second Travis Scott song! I felt that the production seemed very hollow on this, Travis Scott sounds way less engaged & hyped than he normally does, while his somewhat monotonic chanting in the ad-libs kills the vibe of this any further. I normally don’t mind the heavy use of autotune either, but it’s really being overused here! It leaves me with no real reason to revisit this sadly.

3) ‘24/5’ falling a few places this week! Britain, why are you letting this tank? It doesn’t deserve it!

🟠 (Mixed)

1) ‘Flowers [Say My Name]’ is the highest debut of the week! I’m honestly not too sure where I sit with this one. I can hear where ArrDee is a competent MC, but I’m not sure really sure if that reflects on his rapping skills here! Much to my surprise, the samples of ‘Say My Name’ by Destiny’s Child & ‘Flowers’ by Sweet Female Attitude are interpolated as well as they can over a drill beat. I think I’d like this a lot more if it was by a different rapper though, because this is far from ArrDee’s best performance!

2) ‘Escape Plan’ entered the chart & I honestly don’t even feel comfortable fully reviewing this one given the background behind what happened last week! I mean, it’s decent overall with the more haunting production & much tighter flow from Travis Scott, but this doesn’t sit at all well with me when you look into everything that happened last Friday at his Astroworld Festival, but that’s a discussion we can have in the replies if anyone wants to discuss it. RIP to the nine people who tragically lost their lives at it though! 🙏

3) ‘No Love’ is here! I’m really surprised that Summer Walker didn’t have more of a presence in this week’s chart, especially how well she was doing on the Apple Music charts all weekend. That being said, I can definitely see why if any song of hers was going to make a splash in the Top 40, it would be this one! The romantic R&B vibe relaxes me a lot, even if the lyrics are incredibly raunchy. For as much as I think Summer Walker is incredibly underrated, SZA definitely carries this slow jam for me! I don’t see it sticking around sadly, but I hope I’m proven wrong, because I could see this growing on me enough for it to become a future positive section contender.

4) ‘Sad Girlz Luv Money’ made it! Honestly, I can tolerate this a lot more than I should. Sure, the vocals are screechy & the production is incredibly basic, but the voices are layering in a way over the bubbly beat to the point where the whole mood of the song feels kind of elevated! I also repeat the content of how women in today’s society should have full independence in what they do & the chemistry between the two acts in somewhat convincing too. Yeah, this turned out a lot better than expected! I wouldn’t say I love it exactly, but I completely understand the appeal here.

5) ‘Out Out’ gets placed on ACR! For as much as I like Joel Corry, this is definitely one of his weakest singles. It had a really solid run anyway, so I’m not that bothered about it crashing in this new chart!

6) ‘Voyage’ debuted at #1 on the albums chart with the biggest opening week of 2021 so far! Again, it’s good to see ABBA finally back making music together after nearly 40 years, but this is nowhere near as good as some of their 70’s classics.

🟢 (Positive)

1) ‘Easy On Me’ somehow pulls back yet again to spend a fourth consecutive week at #1! Interestingly, this is also the second week in a row where it’s ended up retaining despite an Ed song leading in the mid-week update.

2) ‘Drive’ is officially a Top 20 hit! This has an undeniably warm groove to it that just keeps me coming back to it almost every single day.

3) ‘I Wish’ also made it into the region! Okay, I’m even more fine with ‘Out Out’ being pushed out if it means that this gains some traction instead. This is so much better in my opinion!

4) ‘One Right Now’ is here & man, The Weeknd’s really been on a roll with his 80’s pop anthems, hasn’t he? I absolutely love the tight synths combined the shimmering reverbs give this is a somewhat nostalgic feel back to the disco days from a few decades ago, even though this song only came out last week! It also has to be among one of Post Malone’s consistently solid vocal performances. That hook is an absolute earworm too & I think it could’ve been my new obsession of the week if a certain album hadn’t dropped today, but we’ll get into that in another post.

5) ‘Seventeen Going Under’ not took a massive jump this week, but it’s at a new peak! Does anyone know why it’s back? I don’t recall it getting an ACR reset! So happy about it regardless though, haha.

6) ‘Smokin Out The Window’ charts higher than I personally would’ve expected! Funnily enough, while critics will look to ‘Leave The Door Open’ & ‘Skate’ as the classy Silk Sonic hits that show how well Bruno Mars & Anderson .Paak work together, I actually feel more intrigued by this one. What interests me is that both singers have enough smoothness & pristine in their voices to make this sound like a love song, even though the content is actually about finding that a former lover has been sleeping around with multiple people, therefore causing you to stress smoke! That, along with the 70’s funk instrumentation, turns an otherwise bad situation into something a fair bit more uplifting. I’m actually curious to check out their new album to came out today, because this got me very interested to see what else they’re capable of together!

7) ‘Better Days’ (NEIKED) moved up again! I wasn’t expecting it given how many new entries there were this week, but it’s my favourite EDM song right now, so I’ll definitely take even a climb of one place for this.

8) ‘Do It To It’ cracked the Top 40! It was a big ask trying to match the level of quality from the 2006 R&B original by female group Cherish, but Acraze somehow managed to do it! I love how the beat is perfectly synchronised with the catchy vocal hook, along with the pulsing bassline & bopping drums that hit exactly at the right over the drop. A lot of big DJ’s have been hyping this up at their sets over the summer & honestly, given how it’s impossible not to sing or dance along to this, I can see why, because this is a banger!

9) ‘Red [Taylor’s Version]’ was released today & honestly, I’ve got plenty more to say about it in another post, but right now, I’m still too overwhelmed by the insane quality on it to even do a long piece of commentary of it! All I’m going to say is, if you haven’t already, check it out. It might effectively be a double album with 30 tracks on it & a running time of over two hours, but trust me, it’s worth it!

My latest personal chart (replace the * with an “o”): www.crownnote.c*m/charts/piran/pirans-top-50-14

P.S. Sorry if my analysis of the songs was a bit blunt today! I had a very busy week with work & a lot going on personally, but just let me know if you’d like me to elaborate on anything here & I’ll try to give more of an explanation over the weekend. :)

C

Conor

I love this review, I agree with basically all the points!

avatar

Piran

2

I guess the controversy that I've seen arise lately is people debating on how much Travis Scott is to blame behind it!

On one hand, it appears that he attempted to stop the show several times, but on the other hand, I've seen some sources claim that it was apparently because of losing his shoe rather than the nine people who tragically lost their lives that night or the dozens of others badly injured in the crush! Either way, it seems like he was completely oblivious at the time to the extent of the danger in the crowd at that time.

Personally, I think more of the blame lies with the organisers & security! Yeah, for as much as I'm against it, it's generally easy to smuggle drugs into a festival, but how on earth did it get to stage that the event went well over its capacity? It seemed like fundamental health & safety policies weren't followed there, especially based on some people trying to break in hours before the incident!

Sadly, I get the feeling that a lot of people are going to be put off rap festivals for good after this, but I hope if anything, what happened taught everyone a lesson regarding large-scale outdoor events like this one. :/

avatar

Piran

3

Ah, so it got an ACR reset already? I didn't even know it became big on TikTok until today! :O

Yeah, I definitely agree that it mostly wasn’t his fault, although it’s still a sad situation.

It won’t really change my opinion on him or his music though, I still like him. :)

I really hope they remove ACR and the 3 song rule entirely one day because there are unnecessary dropouts and it really triggers me because I am a fan of these charts and I literally got upset once I found out that ACR and the 3 song rule was introduced. The Billboard charts don't have it so why should we have it.

avatar

john o brien

0

what's the 3 song rule

avatar

eternalricardo

1

That's interesting, I actually thought the opposite - I loved 'Mafia', but thought 'escape plan' was pretty boring and formulaic lol

avatar

Joshua Sombra

0

Basically where only three songs are allowed as a lead artist but there are exceptions for more than 3 entries of the same artist if they are featured as an artist. To be honest with you, it is kind of unfair that the number of songs allowed as a lead artist is limited. I know the last album bomb Divide was chaotic but it was interesting to see all the tracks on the Top 20. If this and ACR was removed now, I would doubt that all album would occupy the whole Top 20 and it could be less likely.

avatar

Joshua Sombra

0

Yes it will. This rule really triggers me because songs have unnecessary dropouts which really puts me off and same goes for that 3 track rule (this rule caused enough unnecessary dropouts as well).

Did you read about the 10 year old little kid who also passed away in the festival? how could they let in such a young person?... the video that kills me is the one where the girl yells at Travis that somebody is dying...he gets panicked...but continues to sing...the girls yells again at him, and he stops another 10 seconds, but goes back to sing....Selena Quintanilla didn´t wait for a second call...she calmed her people...hushed them....controlled them, and then indulged them with the great hit "Como La Flor" which was a precious prices for an in control mass...her scenery was already breaking when she took action...Travis never understood...

An interesting point to note this week regarding ‘Easy On Me’ is that it matches ‘Someone Like You’ as Adele’s longest consecutive run atop the singles chart (both four weeks).

The latter eventually got a fifth non-consecutive week at #1, so maybe we’ll see the former match or even surpass it with the release of ‘30’ happening next Friday!

This is turning out to have more longevity than we were all predicting upon its release. :)

GA

Gerardo Amador

1

Yeah... The release of an album usually puts up the first single released, so, it might happen to "Easy on me".... Hey, does anyone here recall what were the numbers of "Hello" by Adele? For a moment I thought it had done better than "Someone like you"... 🤷
