Juice Wrld. How utterly sad that he is no longer with us. The lad had so much more to offer. What a talent. RIP buddy.

REVIEW!!!
Hello peeps, itā€™s CoolOcelot here (again, on the regular) and Iā€™m back to deliver a review from my home. I will be reviewing the new entries like usual - lined up is Travis Scott, KSI, Juice WRLD, Ava Max and The 1975 so, from the former three being amazing rappers, it should be a good week, I guess. Also, the Live Lounge Allstars at #1 is such amazing news!!! Hope to never ever see Blinding Lights again. Letā€™s get into it, shall we?

avatar

šŸ§” oliviasnoodles šŸœ

3

Up next at #6, we have "Houdini" by KSI, Swarmz & Tion Wayne, the worst of the week. His YouTube channel is funny, so please go and subscribe, and his music has been on good forms recently - "Down Like That" was fire, "Poppin" grew on me a lot, but I found "Wake Up Call" a bit underwhelming. But this? Eh, not for me. KSIā€™s delivery is kind of boring at times, Swarmz did this sort of thing better on "Bally" and Tion Wayne wastes all his potential by sounding annoying. The beat takes some time to stick with you by the end of the song. KSI has delivered better in the past, but like Poppin, this might grow on me. Until then, Iā€™m not a fan. 4/10!

avatar

šŸ§” oliviasnoodles šŸœ

2

Coming in at #11 is Travis Scott & Kid Cudi with "The Scotts"! Ooh, this should be an interesting one, as Travis is an amazing rapper though this came from the online video game Fortnite. And the outcome is really good! Of course, the melody is muted, but the ominous beat comes in with a beep playing through the song. Travis Scott and Kid Cudi both have great chemistry too and their flows are executed well! Regarding Travis, I usually hate it when artists use too much Autotune (the fact that Camila Cabello does it is pathetic) but I just love Travisā€™ vocals here! This was a great song, solid 8/10. But maybe Iā€™ll stick to Forza Horizon 4 or Minecraft?

avatar

šŸ§” oliviasnoodles šŸœ

1

Joy has ran through my blood as Juice WRLDā€™s first posthumous song "Righteous" enters at #26 and is the best of the week. Me adoring this song so much just goes to show how much I miss Juice WRLD! Well firstly, hearing his voice here gave me goosebumps and his delivery reminds me of Post Maloneā€™s "Circles", only better!! And then thereā€™s the beat which blessed my eardrums, being more mellow than I thought it was gonna be! And the lyrics are emotional too, like all Juice WRLD songs. Juice, I hope youā€™re reading this in heaven, but this song proves that you were the greatest rapper of my generation (along with Kendrick) and this made me more emotional than Youā€™ll Never Walk Alone! Rest easy, you legend. 999 forever. This song itself gets a 10/10.

avatar

šŸ§” oliviasnoodles šŸœ

1

Rising up from 42-39 is Ava Max with "Kings & Queens", at last! Now this song has been a favourite of the users on here, but youā€™re gonna hear my opinion... itā€™s okay. Of course, Avaā€™s vocals in that anthemic hook are really powerful which is a good sign. Though while the production is good, Iā€™m tired of Ava using the same beat every time, though the snare does have some echo. Oh, and Iā€™ve dug deeper into the song and itā€™s just another feminist anthem! I can see the appeal, but Iā€™ll stick to "Clap Your Hands" or many of the trap songs weā€™re getting right now. 6/10!

avatar

šŸ§” oliviasnoodles šŸœ

1

I didnā€™t have much to say about "Donā€™t Need Love" at #38, but that song gets a light 5/10 on first listen.

And thatā€™s it, I guess! On the albums side of things, Dua has reclaimed the #1. Hopefully next week weā€™ll see that amazing new song from Marshmello & Halsey "Be Kind", and I will deliver another review. On top of that though, who wants to see my review for "SICKO MODE" by Travis Scott later tonight? Until then, take care! āœŒļø

avatar

šŸ§” oliviasnoodles šŸœ

1

Going in at #14 is The 1975 with "If Youā€™re Too Shy (Let Me Know)"... this is a cool indie record, but it could have been better! Iā€™m not sure how to feel about the intro (that lasts about 47 seconds) but then we get a nice melody coming from the guitars, then the drums kick in, forming a nice beat, as well as lyrics about a girl who Matt who is a bit obsessed with. Then we have Mattā€™s vocals, which arenā€™t good at all and heā€™s delivered much better in the past, and a saxophone towards the end that doesnā€™t fit! So Iā€™m bumping this down to a light 6/10. It had so much potential!

avatar

Alpha Beeta

2

I disagree, Houdini is the best new entry imo, way better than The Scotts.

avatar

šŸ§” oliviasnoodles šŸœ

I get the appeal, but dancehall music isnā€™t for me. I personally prefer Down Like That. I do think Houdini might grow on me in the same way that Poppin did. Still looking forward to that new album of his coming soon!

WEEKLY CHART REVIEW (01/05/2020 - 07/05/2020)

This week, we got one of the busiest charts of the year so far, but itā€™s also easily one of the best!

Obviously, the news thatā€™ll grab the headlines is the new #1. Like last week, itā€™s a highly significant moment not only for Official Chart history, but also in the fight against Covid-19! As for the chart highlightsā€¦ well, itā€™s the first time a charity single has replaced another at the top since November 2014, it's among one of the biggest debut weeks of 2020 so far, it gives 12 acts their first #1 single in the country (stated in another comment) & itā€™s the first ever #1 single for Radio 1 as a whole.

As for my opinion on the song itself, man, itā€™s something special! To be honest, the fact that how the lyrics cover a Foo Fighters classic in how love & persistence will get us through these unusual times is inspiring enough, but what really sounds out about this charity single are the artists! Outside of the incredible passion of AJ Traceyā€™s rap verse, the artists here seem to be either pop or rock, but thereā€™s also a mix of household names & upcoming artists, as well as a mix of British & international names that are big in music right now. So many artists here are making different styles of music, so the fact that the harmonisation is perfect here just blew me away entirely & especially that the emotion all of the artists are showing is only highlighted over the twinkling production, which somehow gives this an even more magical feel, especially when you consider some artists here recorded this over an iPhone or computer rather than in an expensive studio! My only criticism is that they only gave Sigrid two words to herself because she deserves so much more than that given her talent, but Iā€™m still delighted sheā€™s here regardless. Ultimately, the biggest winner to this song is that itā€™s raising even more money for the people who need it most right now! You know something special has happened when this song even hits #1 on Radio 1ā€™s rival chart show & I absolutely adore this collaborative effort too, especially when itā€™s for such a powerful causeā€¦ strong 9/10!

However, thatā€™s somehow not even the best debut of the week for me, because my goodness! Iā€™ve been showing huge support for The 1975 for a while now in the build-up to their upcoming fourth studio album later this month, but this might be among the highlights of their discography for me. Again, one of the things I respect Matty Healy for as a frontman is his honesty & how heā€™s so open about his personal issues, but in a way that reassures others who are going through the same thing, instead of just shoving those issues in your face! Now, on the surface, youā€™d just think this was another song where a girl trying to get intimate with him & he certainly wants to interact with her sensuallyā€¦ but is too nervous to get to know her on a personal level! You can see that heā€™s actually trying to make an effort to get closer to her, rather than just taking her to bed & moving on, like entirely too many songs on this chart are filled off. Even then, along with Matty Healy just being able to sell this really convincingly, the production is what really stunned me here! Iā€™ve always thought The 1975 made their most compelling music when they made up-tempo, arena rock smashes, but what makes this different to all of those are the heavier rollicks of guitar & the blaring horns, along with a sax solo in the bridge that gave me ā€˜The Soundā€™ flashbacks, you know, one of their signature hits. Once again, despite being a pop-rock band, they threw in some jazz elements here & it still rocked! Yeah, it only took me a couple of listens to understand why this was a fan favourite at the concerts the band did at the start of the year, because itā€™s amazing! Itā€™s a shame it didnā€™t become the Top 10 like the update suggested it might. It will get from me though, 10/10!

So those were the two new entries which I just had to rave about, now onto the songs that I wonā€™t do full reviews forā€¦

Firstly, there are still two more songs that I wouldnā€™t say I love, but still like! The first being ā€˜Kings & Queensā€™ finally breaking into the Top 40 after two weeks of barely missing out. With this, itā€™s kind of feminist anthem that actually has some punch to it, with a mix of ABBA & Lady Gaga inspired production thatā€™d be the ideal fit for discos whenever this lockdown ends. Not only that, but Ava Max continues to show off her consistently impressive vocal range! Strong 8/10 for this one.

The other big climber that makes a gain into the Top 40 for the first time is the newest dance smash with even more momentum, ā€˜Donā€™t Need Loveā€™ by 220KID & Gracey! Unlike most rising bangers, this is the kind of one that wouldā€™ve hit the club scene a lot quicker if it werenā€™t for the lockdown, especially with the fuzzy & spacy drop courtesy of 220KID. Even Gracey provides the right kind of dark melody for this, as she describes how lonely she is in general, but still tries to be adventurous when sheā€™s out. In other words, whether or not things start to return to normal over the summer, I have the feeling a lot of EDM fans will be blasting this over the next few months, including me! Solid 8/10.

As for the rap songs, starting with ā€˜Houdiniā€™, woahā€¦ what an improvement over ā€˜Poppinā€™! Okay, I know you canā€™t exactly get much worse than that song, haha, but in all seriousness, this is genuinely decent & Iā€™m amazed that it charted this high given his chart run with his most recent singles. I guess the two big changes are swapping out the imcopentent American rappers Lil Pump & Smokepurpp with insufferable trap production, for two new grime artists & a tropical beat that really packs a punch, making the bragging actually sound fun for once. Light 7/10!

Iā€™d even give ā€˜Righteousā€™ a pass too! The smoother trap beat & guitar plucks that open the song immediately told me that this is going to have a much more depressing tone, but what really brought me with a moment of sadness is how the content describes Juice WRLDā€™s battle with drugs & that he knew it could all end very soon, which is unfortunately what happened. The disappointing part is that this could've been the point where I was really won over by his music, but his voiceā€¦ Iā€™m sorry, Iā€™ll never get behind that with the painful wailing which has never really changed from him, even when he was alive! Thatā€™s going to knock some points off sadly, but itā€™s still not bad by any means & at least I understand the appeal more, even if itā€™s still not my kind of music. Light 6/10!

Unfortunately, one debut that wonā€™t be getting a high score at all is ā€˜The Scottsā€™! I feel like every song that Travis Scott releases is slathered with auto-tune & takes stabs at law enforcement or their opponents, which doesnā€™t really give me any signs of artistic development here. Even Kid Cudi doesnā€™t sound all that memorable over the grating synthesizer which alternates between having a dull crisp sound, to a twinkle that is pitched so high that it almost drowns everything else out, even the bassline! Thereā€™s apparently some hype behind this among critics, but no, not me, not at all. Strong 2/10!

Other things I want to shout-out about this week is Dua Lipa technically getting the chart double, as she part of the #1 song of the week & has the #1 album of the week all to herself! Iā€™m also pleased to see ā€˜Death Bedā€™ finally in the Top 5.

Next week, expect ā€˜Savageā€™ & ā€˜Say Soā€™ to get considerable gains thanks to both hits getting remixes, while ā€˜Times Like Theseā€™ could contend for another week at #1 looking at how well the sales numbers are holding up (although itā€™s going to be tight!).

As always, stay safe everyone! :)

Thirdly, The Scotts is a 2/10? And Righteous only a 6? Come on man. :P

Yeah, that's absolutely crazy! Just shows how much this forum has made a comeback lately. :)

I'll check out your review either later or tomorrow, as I don't think I'll be on for too long this evening.

I know you gave a perfect score to 'Righteous', haha. I did like the song for the most part outside of the underwhelming vocals!

'The Scotts' was appalling! Not going to be happy seeing this at #1 on the Hot 100 next Monday at all.

'Houdini' is a British hip-hop & Afroswing song, the latter of which is heavily influenced by grime...

Well done BBC, you beat a twenty-two week old song with no promo, after repeated promotion through everyone at BBC and all the artists respective fanbase! Sorry if I sound salty, it's good for charity, but it was way too biased and Blinding Lights is one of the best songs of the past few years and I'm a big Weeknd fan. Looking forward to the charts in the next few weeks with lots of new entries!

YES!!! WE DID IT!!! :D

I say "we", because while all 24 artists here have made something absolutely beautiful, the British public have played their part by downloading or streaming this song, as every person doing so has helped the most vulnerable people of our country when they need it most.

Seeing a song recorded in this way is absolutely incredible, Covid-19 can't stop the music industry from making something wonderful!
