I'm surprised no one mentioned the new Jamiroquai single not charting. Not that I'm much of a fan of them anymore. Charts need to be shaken up again I think. Time to ditch streaming and only include singles in the singles chart. Getting too messy and stopping other artists having a chance of getting into the chart. Sick of Ed Sheeran being a cockblocker (even tho I know it is not his fault). Come on OCC - Sort it out!

Heads up: Cloud 9 / Jamiroquai is surprisingly having legs in Japan's chart. The radio seems to be taking to it.

Might be over for Ed this coming Fri.

So Louisa Johnson still hasn't got into the top 40 with her 2nd single (of her own).........you have to weonder how much longer she'll last.
Quite embarassing when the single she reached the highest with was her X Factor song, which she heavily criticised.........

Are we not counting Tears (No. 5, with Clean Bandit)?

Despite tv coverage on ITV, The Voice winner Mo Adeniran's debut song failed to make an impression in the chart. A new entry at 78. According to one website: "It's the worst debut of any first single from The Voice UK winner to date."

& as Chainsmokers release their album this week I predict next week's so called 'singles chart' will consist mainly of chainsmokers tracks, along with the usual ed sheeran & drake played out fodder. Yay, how exciting!!

If anyone prefers a real traditional chart you will click onto the "Sales Chart" and read and like Dave Jackson's accurate comment. Where you will also find Clean Bandit at Number 1 for the 2nd week.

After 12 consecutive weeks of Ed Sheeran at number 1 in Scotland, Clean Bandit finally managed to break the streak with "Symphony"! Even if Ed does return to #1 the following week, I'll still be glad that a song not by him got a chance to be at the top spot!

I actually wouldn't mind if another one of Ed's songs tops the charts in the UK, as long as Shape of You is off because 1) it's been number 1 for 13 teeth-kicking weeks and 2) Shape of You is one of the worst songs of the album, there's so much better on the record

SH

Scott Harris

0

I actually wouldn't mind too much either, as long as it's not "Shape Of You" which is probably breaking streak records over in other countries right now.

The trend of some of the older songs rising after they fell when the More LIfe and ÷ tracks debuted generally continues. One Dance surpassed the year charting while Can't Stop the Feeling! is nearing it.

Here are my thoughts on the UK charts this week:

- THE NUMBER 1: 'Shape Of You' by Ed Sheeran tops the Official Charts for a 13th consecutive week. I still like the song, but it's a shame that it blocked better singles from Ed's album like 'Galway Girl' & 'Castle On The Hill' from reaching #1. That said, I'm very sure that this will be 'Shape Of You's last week at #1; Harry Styles released his debut solo single called 'Sign Of The Times' this morning, which is looking likely to debut at #1 next Friday. At first listen, I would give it a strong 6/10; I prefer Harry's more powerful vocals to his falsetto, but my favourite part of the riff at the end; it reminds me of something David Bowie would've done.

- THE TOP 10: I'm happy to see 'Stay' & 'Issues' reach the Top 10 today, as both songs grew on me a lot over these past few weeks. It's good that Julia Michaels & Alessia Cara are getting more recognition here now! The former is already a very successful song-writer & the latter is a really talented singer in my opinion. Elsewhere, there wasn't much movement at all, but I like that 'Symphony' is still climbing.

- 11-40: Of the five new arrivals in this region, my favourite is 'No More Sad Songs', however I prefer the original to the remix; not a huge fan of MGK's verse unfortunately. 'Humble' would be my next favourite (Kendrick's got a decent flow), then 'Swalla' (catchy beat & hilarious lyrics), then 'Mask Off' (don't like the auto-tune, but the flute line is cool). The only debut I didn't like at all this week was 'Heatstroke'; Calvin's production doesn't impress me here, Young Thug sounds boring & Pharrell's upper range is here is a bit annoying to be honest. Ariana's part isn't bad, but she sounds so much better on her own songs. I just prefer the EDM Calvin Harris made back around 2011-12 a lot more.

- NEXT WEEK'S PREDICTIONS: As mentioned earlier, I think 'Sign Of The Times' will debut at #1 next week & stay at #1 for at least a month. Even though it has no chance of #1 now, I can also see 'Galway Girl' passing 'Shape Of You' within the next week or two. 'No More Sad Songs' will probably go Top 10 & we could also see also see 'Places' & 'Die With You' enter the Top 40 next Friday.

Thanks for reading everyone & have a nice weekend! :)

Techfan

1

Yeah! I agree on your Top 10 observations about those two songs. In particular, Issues is a song that's a bit of an acquired taste. Who sings Place and Die With You? ;)

avatar

Piran

2

'Places' is by Martin Solveig (DJ) ft Ina Wroldsen (singer).
Beyoncé sings 'Die With You'.

avatar

Techfan

1

Oh, I misunderstood for the first one. I thought you meant debut ... Regarding the latter, I wasn't even aware such a song existed but I saw it earlier in iTunes. Apparently, it isn't related to any album. ;)

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

I've not heard Harry's new song yet, but apparently it's rocky and stuff, so if that's the case it's doomed from the top

avatar

Piran

0

Yeah, it's inspired by early 1970s rock & reminds me a lot of David Bowie actually.
What did you think of the debut solo singles from the other 1D members then? :)

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

Zayn - bad and generic
Niall - bland AF (possibly the most boring song of 2-16)
Louis - decent

Anyhow, I'm, back from a mini-holiday, just in time to find your posts! ;P Harry's song was played on the radio a few times, and I actually quite like it. No one else around me seems to though

avatar

Piran

1

Have you heard either song yet & if so, what do you think of either of them? :)

avatar

Piran

0

Cool! Where did you go on holiday? :)
I've actually just got back from University for my 10 day Easter break.
So are you going to do 'ups & downs' for this week then?

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

We just went to a hotel a few hours away for my mum's birthday. I probably won't do Ups & Downs if everything's the same, and Ratings will be on hold until there's hardly any songs in I've never heard

avatar

Techfan

1

Hey Piran! I hope you weekend's going great. :) From the little I've heard, Places just sounds OK, while Die For You I haven't heard.

So Liverpool and Man City both won, but Barcelona lost yesterday ... The latter will have to win versus Real Madrid later in their season, hope for another tie or loss by Real along the way and take care of their games to have a chance to get La Liga title.

Have you heard any of the other The Chainsmokers' album songs? I haven't. I did hear Bohemian Rhapsody and Take on Me by Pentatonix. Both are really good! ;)

avatar

Piran

0

Hey Techfan! My weekend is going well thanks & I hope yours is too. :)
I still need to hear 'Die For You' as well, while I would give 'Places' a 5/10 for now.
Regarding The Chainsmokers' album, the only track I've heard that's not been released as an official single is 'Last Day Alive'. I like it a lot, but I was never expecting them to collaborate with Florida Georgia Line! :O
As for Pentatonix, I've heard 'Bohemian Rhapsody' & really liked it, but not 'Take On Me' yet.
So do you think that The Chainsmokers' album will be #1 on the BB200 next Sunday then? I think that Kendrick will have the #1 for the week after. ;)

S

shekar

1

Hey piran ! Yeah I think too that this might be the last week of shape of you as #1 but sign of time is not that good as shape of you but of course it is harry styles first solo song so had a amazing sales but in matter of streams it is behind the shape of you so if streams are also accounted than it might not debut as #1 that's what I think but we will see.

avatar

Piran

0

Hey Shekar! I hope your day is going well. :)
Yeah, I think a Spotify glitch is one of the reasons why 'Sign Of The Times' is not performing that well in streaming & I only think it's going to last one week atop the sales chart anyway.
As much as I like Ed Sheeran, I don't 'Shape Of You' to last another month & break the record for most weeks as #1, as 'Everything I Do' was one of my favourite songs of the 1990s.
Even if 'Galway Girl' takes the #1 within the next four weeks, I'll be absolutely fine with that!

S

shekar

Yeah I guess no song is going to beat that 16 weeks of that everything I do . but let's hope someone does.

"Mr. Brightside" by the Killers is four weeks away from setting a new record for the most weeks in the Top 100 of the Official UK Singles Chart. It's now been in the Top 100 for a combined period of 163 weeks. The current record for the most weeks in the Top 100 is held by "Chasing Cars" by Snow Patrol, which was on the charts for a combined period of 166 weeks. The record I'm referring to is for combined weeks, so if a song temporarily left the charts and then re-entered it would still be in contention. The record for the longest continuous run in the Top 100 (without leaving the charts) is 95 weeks for "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran.

Ed Sheeran continues to dominate the Official UK Singles Chart this week. He holds the Top 2 spots, with "Shape Of You" (at number 1) and "Galway Girl" (at number 2). "Shape Of You" has now held the top spot for 13 weeks.

"Symphony" by Clean Bandit featuring (19 year old Swedish singer/songwriter) Zara Larsson rises one place to number 3 this week. This song has already reached number 1 in Sweden, becoming the fifth number one from Larsson in her native land.

"Passionfruit" by Drake falls one place to number 4 this week. It's the second single from Drake's new playlist entitled "More Life". It's a dancehall pop song written by Drake along with British producer-songwriter Nana Rogues and has additional vocals from Zoe Kravitz (Zoe Kravitz is the daughter of musician Lenny Kravitz and actress Lisa Bonet). "Passionfruit" is performed in the key of G# minor in common time with a tempo of 112 beats per minute. Drake's vocals span from F#3 to G#4.

"Something Just Like This" by the Chainsmokers and Coldplay rounds off the Top 5 this week. It's the second single off the Chainsmokers' debut studio album, "Memories...Do Not Open" which dropped today (April 7, 2017) via Disruptor Records and Columbia Records.

"Humble" by Kendrick Lamar debuts at number 21. It was produced by Mike Will Made It and Pluss. The song's accompanying music video (directed by Dave Meyers and The Little Homies) was released on March 30, 2017 on Kendrick's Vevo account.

"Sign Of the Times" by Harry Styles was released today. I'm expecting it to debut on the chart next week (hopefully in the Top 10). I think it's the best of all the songs released by One Direction members (that's just my opinion).

Sunshine Gal

1

i still haven't checked out harry's new single, i'll def. do that soon. think it'll lock the #1 spot the following week too?

avatar

Techfan

1

You should and let us know what you think ... I mentioned something about it in the BB article where you can listen to it.

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

yeah i heard it, it's alright :D i like his sound more in the 1D group.

avatar

Techfan

1

Anyway, it looks headed for #1 debut in the Hot 100 if sales up to now are any indication. Plus when I hear it in YT the audio had 450k views and it has gone past 2.5 million.

If I'm not wrong, Perfect was mostly him singing the main parts of the song, right? ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

2

i believe so...well, that's great for a #1 debut! too bad it won't be a history making feat or anything. then will ed reclaim the #1 spot over here the following week?

avatar

Techfan

1

I don't know about the latter. Shape of You I don't think would return to #1 in digital sales. So that leaves radio (still a healthy lead) and streaming to help it return. That's What I Like had already reduced the gap in both regards.

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

oh i checked the rockhall . com site: def leppard, guns n roses and bon jovi are not inducted yet! but green day got in 2015?? i'm cool with that...but come on now :D!

avatar

Techfan

1

Yeah, all those should definitely be in. ;D

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

do you know who london grammar is? first time i've ever heard of them. they're supposed to have an album out this year.

avatar

Techfan

1

No, but they had a debut album debuting four years ago at #2 in the UK and Australia, and #3 in Belgium. In the BB 200, it only reached #91. So no wonder there are unknown to us. Maybe Piran has heard about them?

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

oh and the official charts say shania is coming out with a new album...think it'll be avail in the u.s.? and i don't know what her sound would be without mutt lange.

avatar

Techfan

1

I didn't know. There was a rumor that she might perform one of the songs from it at the ACMs that didn't come true. Apparently, the album would be personal and have to do with her divorce ... :O

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

i wonder what her new sound will be like....? i still think the 'come on over' album is her very best piece of work! hard to believe all that was 20 yrs ago :D

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

hey what's up everybody! :))))))

avatar

Piran

1

Hey Sunshine Gal! How has your week been? :)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

hey mate! why weren't you 1st comment? i went ahead and waited so you could be 1st comment :D

avatar

Piran

1

Haha! I've been studying a lot today, so that's why I'm so late on here.
So what do you think of the Official Charts this week then? :)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

yeah i thought i'd just go ahead and let your ar$e be the first comment :D well, has ed been #1 for the past 13 wks?? i think it's incredible he still has the top 2 spots. basically, he's doing the same thing when usher dominated the hot 100 in 2004 :)

avatar

Techfan

1

Hi Sunshine Gal! How have you been? :D

avatar

Piran

1

I'll be the first comment on Sunday & Monday though. ;)
Yeah, only 'One Dance' has been at #1 longer than 'Shape Of You' since the start of the streaming era! That said, 'Shape Of You' probably won't be #1 next week due to Harry Styles' new single.

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

yeah i'll go ahead and let you be 1st comment on the hot 100 ;)
we'll see about sunday though :D so, harry will debut @ #1 next week over here?

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

hey what's up buddy! you actually got here before both myself and piran :D

avatar

Techfan

1

Yes, I did! So how's your therapy going? :)

avatar

Piran

1

It's very likely he'll debut at #1 in the UK next Friday & maybe even in the US for the Monday after next! :)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

really!?? harry might debut @ #1 on the hot 100?? wow! too bad it wouldn't be any kind of a unique feat though :/ but still, a great achievement!

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

i go on monday for an appt. but i still have a slight limp in my walk and forget the stairs :D but everyone's really happy for me not needing the crutch anymore :) thanks for asking!

avatar

Piran

1

I don't think it will get a massive debut on the radio, but its sales are off to an incredible start! Have you heard the song yet? :D

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

sorry mate, i was on the recent whitney article over on bb...there's gonna be a future documentary of her, but this director didn't care to seek the approval of her estate and family :/

anyhow, is harry's song on youtube? i'll try and find it...listening to def leppard right now :)

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, but there's only an audio on YouTube at the moment. I don't think there's an official video yet.
I just posted my review of this week's charts by the way! :)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

i listened to it briefly, it's alright :D and ok i'm still on fb and on the whitney article...are you getting harry's album?

avatar

Techfan

1

You're welcome. It'll take some time, but soon you'll be as good as new! ;) I remember the two times I had the walking cast removed it felt as if I was walking with two left feet.

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

yeah my dad doensn't notice the limp, but i certainly do. so we'll see how things over the coming weeks.

avatar

Techfan

1

Well, obviously you do since you're the one trying to walk.

avatar

Piran

1

I'll have to hear reviews on it & his next single before I decide whether or not I'm going to get his album. Do you think you'll be getting it then?
Anyway, sorry I have to go so soon, but have a good night & chat to you tomorrow hopefully! :)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

well, i do note the improvements and all, but i still walk a slower pace. but i'll keep you guys updated :)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

prob not :D. i didn't get niall's or zayn's albums...you know me, i want them all back in the group :D and ok, hopefully we can chat more next time :)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

hey mate, who the heck is london grammar? techfan and i are discussing them (we both don't know who they are). they were mentioned on an article here for upcoming album releases for 2017.

avatar

Piran

1

They're an English trio & they've made the Top 40 on the UK singles chart three times with: 'Hey Now', 'Wasting My Young Years' & 'Strong'.
Their debut album, 'If You Wait', reached #2 on the albums chart over here (it unfortunately only reached #91 on the BB200).

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

hey mate!!! yeah, another uk act i've never heard of :D

avatar

Techfan

2

Overall, the Top 8 had minor movement if at all. There are 19 More Life songs and all ÷ Deluxe songs are still charting. Then we have the return of Mr. Brightside ... I'll comment more later!

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

can you imagine if ed held the top 2 spots on the hot 100 for weeks and weeks?

avatar

Techfan

2

That'd be a bit too much!

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

but didn't usher do the same thing back during the 'confessions' album?

avatar

Techfan

1

Yeah, but only for 3 non-consecutive weeks. Yeah! and Burn were never #1 and #2 at the same time. It was Burn and Confessions Part II that did so. It was interrupted by Fantasia's I Believe debuting at #1.

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

hey buddy, did you catch on bb about the list of female acts that should be inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame? so far, according to this article, aretha franklin is the only female solo act inducted!! no madonna, whitney, janet, diana ross, cher, donna summer, tina turner, pat benatar, mariah, celine, shania...!!??

avatar

Techfan

1

I haven't read the article, but that seems so wrong ... :(

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

well, i skimmed too fast :D he says when aretha was inducted 30 yrs ago she was the only female solo act to be inducted. madonna was inducted in 2008. but nirvana was inducted in 2011 *i think that's the year* but janet and whitney still aren't inducted? i don't know about you, but i remember whitney and janet being there before anyone heard of nirvana ;)

avatar

Urban City Cowboy

0

Which Nirvana?

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

uh...only 1 nirvana i know of and the one from seattle, washington :) with kurt cobain.

avatar

Okay. Just checking as there was a band in the 60's also called Nirvana.

OCC mistake #578: Unsteady is by Mo - The Voice UK winner not the girlgroup (or the Scandinavian female).
