Haven't heard four of the top 10. We don't talk about Bruno,Peru,Surface Pressure and fingers Crossed. What are they like?

We Don’t Talk About Bruno is pretty good, Peru is mediocre, haven’t heard Surface Pressure, and Fingers Crossed is godawful. :)

Hey Edward! :)

Two of them are both from the 'Encanto' soundtrack! 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' is a lot more theatrical & is a grower, whereas 'Surface Pressure' is the more anthemic hit although isn't really getting a high replay factor for me.

'Peru's an Afrobeat song that Ed's hopped on (no wonder it's this big), while 'Fingers Crossed' is effectively a much more acoustic & throatier version of 'Drivers License'!

How have you been anyway? I was going to ask if you'd be interested in rejoining the Discord server soon, given that the drama there has been dead for months now & it's now an extremely friendly community once again?

Hi everyone, Sorry that I haven't commented here for two months it's mainly because I haven't had enough time. I'm hoping to start commenting regularly again 🙂.

Anyways, How are you all?

Great to see Gayle knock Adele off the top spot. She would have been number 1 2 weeks ago had it not been for Christmas songs. Where you now is doing really well which is good. Also good to see Do it to it in the top ten last week.

The Weeknd did wonders with new album release as he have 6 songs on TOP 100 this week including 3 songs inside the TOP 40. Despite that he was lucky to have "Sacrifice" peaked inside the TOP 10 at #10 (was #06 on midweeks but barely make it TOP 10 as sales and streams keep dropping).

"Take My Breath" rised to #14 failling to better the #13 peak it have (was #07 on midweeks but failed to stay there).

Both songs will fall very fast next week as "Sacrifice" already dropped to #26 on iTunes and to #17 on Spotify while "Take My Breath" is now outside iTunes TOP 50 sales and at #96 on Spotify. His new single "Gasoline" may get into the charts next week as it's #55 on Spotify (but is not on iTunes TOP 100 right now).

The album peaked #01 but as was only released digitally and almost all points(equivalent units) came from streaming he will most probably fall out TOP 10 next week (as his streams were huge first 2 days but have been falling faster and faster each day).

I cant believe how Brave could not place higher though most of the songs dropped this week. Really love Ella Henderson.

How can When I'm Gone be stucked at 72 being such a dance anthem? It didn't have enough radio airplay??

avatar

Piran

1

Radio airplay is actually its strong point, along with sales, but it’s lacking in streams. :/

Griff’s had a couple of minor hits & a lot of support from Radio 1 as far as I’m aware, but Sigrid sells consistently well, so hopefully both of those will be combined when ‘Head On Fire’ can hopefully impact the charts next week. :)

Song recommendation of the week - 'Human Heart' by Marc Benjamin & Jay Mason. This track, released this year, has a really nice build-up to the chorus and even if it the chorus is disappointing, the melody is really laid-back for being an EDM song. Let's see if this can debut on top of my chart later, it is battling 'Brave' by Ella Henderson, 'Love Is Just A Word' by Jasmine Thompson & Calum Scott and finally 'Sweet Talker' by Years & Years & Galantis (Glad this stayed Top 40 here as well!)

Sweet Talker is amazing!

WEEKLY CHART REVIEW (14/01/2022 – 20/01/2022)

🔴 (Negative)

1) ‘We Don’t Talk Bruno’ climbs into third position! This is meant to be the huge breakthrough hit for ‘Encanto’ & I honestly don’t get why. It doesn’t have the same anthemic swell like previous soundtrack hits in the charts like ‘Let It Go’ or ‘This Is Me’, for example. Granted, I can’t really comment on the content in context with the film (purely because I haven’t seen it yet), but unfortunately, no member of the cast here seems to stand out to me either! Yeah, sorry, I appreciate Lin-Manuel Miranda’s writing a lot (especially over Latin production), but this song feels incredibly boring & dreary as a whole.

2) ‘Pushin P’ made it in! I mean, come on, it doesn’t even sound any of three rappers in question are trying. I couldn’t even make out what they were saying because of how mumbled & autotuned they all sound, not to mention how terribly the production is mixed into it! There’s at least some kind of alliteration going on here, the bass groove is okay & some of the lyrics are just so cringewortby that they’re actually kind of laughable, but no, even those things aren’t enough to save this from being a sloppily produced mess.

🟠 (Mixed)

1) ‘ABCDEFU’ finally took the #1 despite narrowly missing out last week! This song seems to be one that’s divided opinion across the community & even with all of that, I’m still not sure where I sit on it. Sure, the writing is incredibly basic & the rollicking guitar that opens the song along with Gayle’s bitter delivery kind of reminds me of ‘Hot Girl Bummer’! That being said, this is at least a little bit better because of the sudden swell of anger in the hook where Gayle is just done trying to be patient with an ex that’s treating her horribly & remember that she’s only 17 at the end of the day. Overall, this is fine enough, but given how much it’s getting overplayed & the insane competition coming from break-up songs now, I’m not sure how well this is going to end up aging for me!

2) ‘Fingers Crossed’ took a massive jump as everybody predicted! Funnily enough, the first thing I heard about this song were immediate comparisons to ‘Drivers License’ & is it just me, or is there very little resemblance between the two songs at all? For one, Lauren is taking a much more acoustic approach to this with the instrumentation, particularly in the verses, but I find her vocals to be a lot throatier & sometimes even more rough, especially in the hook! I guess while it’s a good sign that her voice doesn’t crack beneath all the raw power she’s driving into that chorus, it also limits the vocal range that she’s truly capable of reaching, which is probably why I prefer the breathier delivery towards the end of the song. Another thing to note is the content, because while it was clear that Rodrigo still has feelings after parting ways from a former lover, Spencer-Smith is very dismissive of the guy in question & absolutely wants nothing more to do with him! So yeah, this certainly isn’t bad & I completely get why new single people would turn to it, but at the same time, I don’t think this is going to be the career-defining moment for the upcoming teenager unlike what we were seeing exactly a year ago around now, that’s all I’m saying.

3) ‘Surface Pressure’ breaks into the Top 10! See, this is the kind of track from the ‘Encanto’ soundtrack that sounds like it has a lot more long-term potential. Funnily enough, the vocals range from Lizzo in the first verse to Katy Perry in the hook, but I still feel that Jessica Darrow is sticking too much to her lower range & this really could’ve had a lot more potential if she pushed for those power notes instead! Mind you, I think the larger issue here is the backing band not really showing any sense of real dynamic whatsoever, which you’d think a song that addresses the pressures of anxiety & stress kind of effective to have. Again, I probably like this more than any other song from the film at least out of those charting, but this should still be a lot better in my opinion!

4) ‘Retail Therapy’ making its debut! I’ve never been one to get on board with Central Cee due to his lack of hype & limited flow, but neither of those seem to be much of a problem here at all. Yeah, I think he rides the beat fairly well, the percussion touches to this sound really pristine & the drill bass hits at just the right time! I’m still not fully sold on the sped-up sample of Hank Crawford’s ‘Wildflower’ just yet & the lyrics are ultimately just Central Cee bragging about his extensive clothing range, but for his usual standards, this ranks above average for me. Maybe it’ll grow on me even more with a few additional listens?

5) ‘Miserable Man’ hits the Top 40! Okay, I think one thing I have to commend with this is David Kushner himself. His deeper vocals to really hone in on the story-telling of how he’s overcome his troubles by moving to a new home with his family & all the anguish he looks back on kind of gives me stripped-back Hozier vibes. The echoey background vocals might make this all the more sombre, but they’re also a fitting accompaniment, especially as the song comes to a close! Heck, even the guitar swipes over a fairly simple melody don’t really bother me as much as they normally would for a song in this lane. So what’s holding this back for me? Probably the fact that it’s dragged out for way longer than it needs to be, especially with the outro, it would’ve been a much better climax to finish off with a final verse or something, but hey, if any song I’m covering today has potential to be upgraded to the positive section, it’s this one!

6) ‘Make Me Feel Good’ held up better than I expected! This seems to be going more for the retro disco vibe in literally every single aspect, so I’m entirely on board with how much it stands out from the other dance hits in the chart, but even as a lifelong EDM lover, I can’t help that feel that this is way too repetitive to properly get into it.

🟢 (Positive)

1) I’ve now given my scores for The Weeknd’s new album in another post, but let’s just say that I’m absolutely delighted about him getting the #1 album with ‘Dawn FM’, especially when some of the highlights from it like ‘Sacrifice’ & ‘How Do I Make You Love Me?’ are both here, but ‘Less Than Zero’ joining them really would’ve been the icing on the cake!

2) ‘Where Are You Now’ moved into the Top 20! I was kind of worried that the UK would just sleep on this when it was taking off over Europe last autumn, but I’m so glad that they didn’t.

3) ‘Down Under’ is holding up relatively well! I’m usually kind of mixed on drum & bass music as a whole, but this took a classic rock hit from the 80’s & somehow didn’t ruin it! That has to be worth something, haha.

Thanks for reading everyone! Glad to be bringing these weekly reviews back here yet again. :)

girl "We don't tal about Bruno" is a master piece, it's hard to have a song with so many layers and voices and still making it relatable, telling a astory throught it, making it catchy and appealling all audiences . It already destroyed every other Disney song in the UK chart (let it go only reached number 11) I think you're not objective with this one because literally ALL producers and singers from youtube praised the production, lyrics and the whole ensemble. Mayve watch the mocie, also I think is coming for the first number one in the UK for a Disney song in more than a decade

We already discussed this in DM's, but I'm happy for 'Here We Go... Again' getting a relatively high score at least. :)

less than zero, out of time and here we go again are the best songs on the album (the latter is carried by the tyler feature tho)

also, i think the swedish house mafia remix of sacrifice is better than the og

Did you really gave "Take My Breath" 1/100 or is there a number missing? I mean... is that the worst song you ever listened to ever? I don't love the song but it isn't that bad either.

I still haven’t heard the remix of ‘Sacrifice’ yet, but I think it go Top 10 for me if it’s as good as everyone’s hyping it up to be. :)

Really disappointed that ‘Brave’ & ‘Don’t Wake Me Up’ are both nowhere near the Top 40! :(

I really hope that at least one of them will be a slow burner, or at the very least get some radio airplay over the weeks ahead.

Can’t relate, I hate both of those songs, especially the former. :(

Agree totally!! I imagined "Brave" at the top 20 even higher!!!..... Look at what happened with "Fingers crossed"... So I thought about "Brave"... With "Don't wake me up" I did expect it to be at the top 20, but it hasn't grown that much on me as Ella's song... 😒 (sigh)

idk, it’s just that she’s quite boring imo, like, her music hasn’t clicked with me as much as it should have.

Fair enough! I personally think she’s a very passionate singer & some of her songs can be very motivational. :)
