Happy for Little Mix. They deserve it!

Hopefully Miley can stay in the top10 on friday but she is usually so unlucky when it comes to midweeks and final charts :(

Nice to see solah at #4 with Get Out My Head, stunning singer and vocals, her name is not said on the radio or artwork just the backing mixer guy.

Hoping the business can hold on to top 40!

2

So last year on the first week of January 2020, Mr Brightside re-entered at #75, it's currently #70 right now on the update lol

One of these days it will re enter at 1

avatar

Cameron

2

I honestly would not be surprised

avatar

Cameron

3

Oh yeah lol the previous record was 1 - 97

avatar

Rector

4

Wham doesn't deserve this record ๐Ÿ˜ญ

avatar

I'd rather they were #1 and fell out after then not become #1 at all lol

2

Yeah, now it's number 1 to See ya next time ๐Ÿ˜‚

Ian Robert Herechuk

2

Why do Whitney and Journey show as only having 1 week on the chart ??

avatar

Cameron

4

Idk but they need to sort it out, they had I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday peaking at #25 or something even though it peaked at #4 lol

avatar

Rector

5

The "Weeks in Chart" column here only applies to the Chart Update charts. Meaning those songs have not appeared in previous chart update charts since its inception in 2014. The peak is universal though (that's why you see it's #1 and #6)

avatar

Ian Robert Herechuk

4

Thanks - makes sense

P

PN

3

Why has Tom Walker re-entered at 83?

avatar

Ian Robert Herechuk

5

Pleased to see Kylie and Due Lipa debuting at 67 - needs to go higher by Friday.

avatar

Piran

6

OH NO... 'I HOPE' AT #92?! :(

Please don't let that chart, I'm literally begging you guys.

avatar

GS

3

Yeah, a country song in the UK charts. Tragic

avatar

Piran

3

I'd literally take any other country than that trash, even 'Body Like A Backroad'! :(

avatar

GS

3

Its better than d*cked down in dallas

avatar

Piran

3

Why couldn't it be Luke Combs or Maren Morris debuting instead? :(

avatar

Ian Robert Herechuk

2

Or something by Kane Brown - he's done some great collabs recently

avatar

Piran

2

Exactly! 'Be Like That' was so underrated outside of North America. :)

avatar

๐Ÿงก oliviasnoodles ๐Ÿœ

1

NO. THIS IS TRAGIC.

avatar

Sadly, the British public did let this shambolic mess debut, three places higher than the update was indicating! :(

avatar

Ian Robert Herechuk

4

I predicted that - yaaay

avatar

Piran

4

I could honestly see this peaking inside the Top 20 at least! I'm just impressed that it didn't get flushed out after the Christmas takeover, haha. :)

avatar

GS

3

Hopefully it can hold on for friday

avatar

Piran

5

I'm sure it will! If anything, it could end up higher on the final chart. :)

'Sweet Melody' is definitely getting that #1 on Friday, haha.

Ed might've closed the gap on Little Mix today, but the latter have insane sales & trending from out of nowhere today! :O

P

PN

6

They should do hopefully :)

avatar

GS

4

It wasnt out of nowhere lol ๐Ÿ˜‚

avatar

Piran

3

I swear they went from having one version of 'Sweet Melody' in the Top 10 a couple of hours ago to five right now! :P

avatar

GS

4

There was a video going round on twitter saying they will mass buy & stream sweet melody on monday. I wasnt expecting them to go this far though ๐Ÿคฃ

avatar

Piran

7

I love both 'Sweet Melody' & 'Afterglow', so I wouldn't mind either way, but I feel like it would be more refreshing seeing Little Mix at #1 over yet another Ed Sheeran song at the top! :P

P

PN

6

Precisely why I really want Little Mix to do it :)

avatar

Piran

4

Yeah, I think Little Mix have only had four #1's, while Ed has had nine, haha. :)

P

PN

5

Should be 5 (Woman Like Me)... but still

'Touch' should've made it six! ;)

Anyone other than that awful shocking Little Mix .

They are talentless.

avatar

Piran

It feels more like you're trolling than giving any explanation as to why they're "talentless" (which I don't think they are, they have some good hits in their discography!). :P

You're almost spamming at this point. :/

Piran. The problem is I hate the way The Singles Chart works today compared to 20 years ago.
There are a lot of great musicians new and old who will never ever have another Top 100 Single cause real music fans want the record in there hand and not a digital download, Spotify, You Tube etc.
So when a real band release a single, the fans just wait until the album comes out causing the single to flop.
The Singles Chart. You can pay ยฃ10 a mouth and have access to ยฃ60M records, so how does that reflect on the charts and people don't have to buy a single to get it, cause they can just put You Tube on rather than buy it.
The Charts should be Physical Sales, just look at The Top 100 Albums completely different.
You can come in at No 1 in The Album Charts, but fell to have a Top 100 Single.
I just get upset with talent shows such as The X Factor, The Voice who are just karaoke singers.
There are too many artists out there who can't sing so they just talk into a computer and it does it all for you, can't play real instruments or write there own songs.
Computers make people lazy.
Reference to Little Mix, I just hate girl and boy bands.
I personally think most of today's artists just wouldn't make the charts 40 years ago.
Basically who buys singles these days, with all these new rules The Singles Charts mean nothing these days.
You used to have to sell 1Million Copies to get a Platinum Single.

avatar

Piran

I understand the generational divide, but using Physical Sales to determine a Singles Chart is completely ridiculous!

Pure sales of albums might still be fairly high, but almost nobody buys physical copies of individual singles now (in fact, with the lockdown, it's probably almost impossible to get one in today's environment).

Streaming accounts for well over 80% of the UK's musical market, so it would make sense that more emphasis is placed on that in the charts, since that's how a good majority of people choose to listen to music!

Using physical sales to determine singles success would be like using old ยฃ1 coins to determine who the richest people are... outdated, irrelevant & frankly, inaccurate. :/

NC

Nigel Coleman

Okay I don't like change.
Could you tell me how the charts work now.
You have streaming, downloads, You Tube, Spotify, Paying ยฃ10 a month to have access to 60 Million songs.
When you don't have to buy a record to get it, how can the charts be accurate by listening to You Tube and paying ยฃ10 a month and have 60M songs.
See I get upset cause I love the Keane and bands like them will never have a hit single again, cause real fans want the record in there hands.
I feel that the singles from there last album "Cause and Effect" , " The Way I Feel" and " Love Too Much" were brilliant and are a very talented band, but people will say they have had there day.
I probably am old fashioned, but great bands don't have hit singles anymore only albums and I find that very sad.
It's like in the old days anyone from the age of 9 to 90 could have a hit single, no chance now.

McCartney 111 recently want to No 1 in the Album Charts and this week Barry Gibb has done the same, so maybe you can explain to me why they won't have a Top 100 Single from these album's.
You can't say they are not good enough when the album is No1.
Radio Stations would rather play there old stuff rather than there new.
It's cause real music fans would rather have the record in there hands than have the alternative rubbish we have available today.
Basically no one buys singles anymore.

avatar

Piran

0

That's my point! If nobody buys singles anymore, then just including physical sales for singles into the chart would be completely unrepresentative of what the British are listening to.

In Barry Gibb's case, fans listen to his music for the album as a whole & not the individual tracks from it, which is why he's #1 on the albums, but not inside the Top 100 on the singles chart!

Don't even get me started on radio stations either, because I'm really glad that our charts don't include airplay. :/

avatar

Piran

0

I still think that some 2020 hits like 'Blinding Lights' & 'Don't Start Now' would've done really well in decades like the 80's! :D

The chart formula is a bit weird to explain, but basically, 100 paid streams = 1 "sale" & 600 free streams = 1 "sale", unless a song is placed on ACR (this is where a song has been on the chart for at least 10 weeks & declined in streams in three consecutive weeks). Songs on ACR have a 200:1 ratio for paid streams & a 1200:1 ratio for free streams! I personally disagree with the whole idea of having ACR in the charts though.

Regarding the point on age, I beg to differ. We've just had a 17-year-old enter the chart at #1 with her debut single this week & it wasn't even a year ago that 100-year-old Captain Sir Tom Moore did the same (mostly fuelled by downloads / digital sales), so there's certainly a wide range of generations who can get chart success in the UK right now!

NC

Nigel Coleman

The reason they are not buying singles is cause they can't buy it on the format like they used too.
Either cd single or vinyl and don't wish to go down the road of steaming etc.
The only reason Sir Tom Moore made No1 was cause it represented charity.
Paul McCartney won't make the Top 100 like a lot of real bands Won't.
Finally how does paying ยฃ10 a month with 60M songs work with the charts.
I think the charts only work this way cause people don't buy singles anymore though no fault of there own, and steaming are not sales.
These new rules are and have killed off a lot of artists and bands.

avatar

Piran

0

There's no such thing as "real bands"! Almost all the groups today are just as genuine as they always have been. :/

Ultimately, it comes down to music taste & people will naturally discover newer artists, which is why success for anyone is music (or any profession for that matter) often won't last forever!

Good news everybody.
I think enough has been said refering to my thoughts on The Singles Charts and how they work now.
I will be listening to songs in the charts and adding my thoughts as well as listing songs I like.
Take Care everyone.
