Angels is Robbie Williams' biggest UK hit, both his best-selling and Robbie's most-streamed song in the UK, according to Official Charts data.
Released as a single on 1 December 1997, Angels was taken from Robbie Williams' debut solo album, Life Thru A Lens, his first album release following his well-documented departure from Take That.
A timeless power ballad with deeply personal lyrics, Angels was written by Robbie Williams and song-writing partner Guy Chambers, who collaborated on many of Williams' early solo hits. Chambers provided the music, while Williams wrote the lyrics, Williams has stated that the song holds personal significance for him and has described it as a "secular hymn."
Despite never reaching Number 1, Angels was a huge commercial success, reaching number 4 on the UK Official Singles Chart and going on to be one of the best-selling singles of 1997, landing at Number 38 in the end-of-year chart based on only one month of sales. It went on to join the rare million sellers club in the UK, and remains one of Robbie Williams' most enduring and popular songs and a staple of his live concert setlists.
The song's black and white music video, directed by Vaughan Arnell, features Robbie Williams performing the song in various locations, including a beach and a concert stage.
At the BRIT Awards 2005 where Robbie performed Angels live with Joss Stone, the British public voted Angels as the best song of the past 25 years.
