As much as I dislike their music, it’s what is fundamentally wrong with the top 100 nowadays that Westlife can be at number three in the sales chart but not featuring at all in the overall top 100. I know that streaming is a major part of the music industry, but the charts are fairly meaningless now.

They have had only one day of sales/streaming compared to seven days for everyone else. Next week they will probably be number 1 on sales and will definitely enter the top 100

I think the official chart should be rebranded as the official streaming top 40. That way no-one can moan about sales. We'll accept streaming has replaced digital and physical sales. I'm surprised the OCC and the major record companies haven't agreed to that change. The sales chart (in terms of units sold) has no bearing on the official chart so it's time to rebrand the chart.The official UK Streaming Top 40/100 chart.

Download/physical sales can remain part of the official streaming chart to preserve continuity but streaming 'sales'/plays are far more popular. I think it's around 90 percent streaming chart content?

Westlife will never appeal to teenagers that stream. I'm guessing any chart success will be down to their loyal fan base buying the song! Take That's recent single 'Out Of Our Heads' failed to chart despite their loyal fan base.

Teenagers haven't heard of Gary Numan! I doubt many know much nor care about Westlife, Boyzone, Take That. It will be a minor miracle if older groups/singers have streaming chart success! Near impossible, I reckon.

However they were able to easily get a number 1 album and I expect the same thing will happen with Westlife.

Also the Westlife song is doing way better than the Take That song on sales. They are number 1 on the iTunes chart whereas 'Out Of Our Heads' could only reach number 8 on that chart

That's true and sad. The same happens to Kylie, despite being a pop legend, any of her latest singles couldn't make top 20 because she isn't strong on streaming but only on physical sales. Totally absurd

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

- ‘Sweet But Psycho’ by Ava Max is #1 on the singles chart for a third consecutive week. Mainly thanks to 7.6 million streams over the past week, she finishes a huge 27,000 combined sales ahead of Ariana Grande!

- ‘Nothing Breaks Like A Heart’ by Mark Ronson ft Miley Cyrus remains at #1 on the national airplay chart.

- As well as dominating the overall chart, ‘Sweet But Psycho’ is the new #1 on YouTube this week, despite losing 0.2 percent of last week’s views to 3.05 million.

- HEADIE ONE FT DAVE – 18HUNNA (#6)
This was the biggest trending song of the week & even more prove that Dave among some of the most popular grime artists over the past few years. Both his & Headie One’s flows are very quick & well above average & the menacing beat gives this a ton of hype! There are a ton of overused references from this subgenre in the content & if you’re bragging, you have to at least be convincing & intense in your delivery, which again, I think they accomplish that here! My only problems with this are the same as those that I have on a majority of mainstream British rap as a whole, which aren’t even that major, so I’m thinking a solid 7/10 for this overall!

- CHRIS BROWN – UNDECIDED (#15)
So while I’m not a huge fan of Chris Brown as a person, I’ve always been very mixed with his music; his worst songs are terrible but his best ones are amazing. With this, yeah, it’s fairly decent overall! The biggest drawing point of the song is that fun & hypnotic melody, which makes this song stand out among most R&B in the charts right now. I still like Chris Brown’s smooth vocals although I wouldn’t say I’m wowed by them anymore. Of course the issue here is what’s affected a lot of Chris Brown hits this decade; the content is far more $exual than it needs to be, with him unsure about a relationship, but only focusses on the parts about getting this woman into bed. At least here there’s no other factors that knock it back for me & it’s at least addictive, so I’m going to say… strong 6/10!

- NSG FT TION WAYNE – OPTIONS (#25)
Question: did anyone else think this would hit the charts this week? I certainly didn’t because it didn’t exactly pull big numbers on neither Spotify nor YouTube & had negligible sales nor radio with it, so I’m guessing it came down to Apple Music. What’s even more confusing is the appeal behind it because the song is almost impossible to care for. What I got from the lyrics are alternating between bragging to how they’re on the phone all the time then back to flexing. The vocals are a combination of minimal effort to whining & the production is somehow even worse, with a clunky beat that fails to even stay in time with the bars & just seems like a complete mess! This was an earache throughout, light 3/10.

- LEWIS CAPALDI – GRACE (#33)
I’ve been expecting this for a while now actually, given that this song was always getting a ton of airplay even over Christmas, especially on Radio 1! Although, despite its critical acclaim, I’m not really won over by it all that much sadly. I can praise how the lyrics capture the emotion of how whoever he’s singing about has altered his life effectively & beautifully, but is he trying too hard vocally? I get a soaring, raw tone can capture that power even more, but it just seems like he’s shouting during the hook & that completely kills it for me, but even then, I’m not sure I’m sold by his soulful delivery in the verses nor the generally unnoticeable beat. I don’t dislike this as a whole, but it got old quick for me. Strong 5/10.

- The soundtrack to ‘The Greatest Showman’ has been in the albums chart for an entire year now & it has spent half at that at #1 (26 weeks!).

- The rest of the Top 5: ‘Staying At Tamara’s’ by George Ezra (stationary at #2), ‘A Star Is Born’ [Soundtrack] (4-3), ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ [Soundtrack] (6-4) & ’50 Years – Don’t Stop’ by Fleetwood Mac (8-5).

- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Hello My Love’ by Westlife, ‘Dancing With A Stranger’ by Sam Smith & Normani, ‘Giant’ by Calvin Harris & Rag’n’Bone Man, ‘Someone You Loved’ by Lewis Capaldi, ‘All Night’ by Example, ‘Lost In The Fire’ by Gesaffelstein & The Weeknd, ‘Nights Like This’ by Kehlani ft Ty Dolla $ign, ‘More Than That’ by Lauren Jauregui, ‘Ill Wind’ by Radiohead, ‘When I Was Older’ by Billie Eilish, ‘Saturday Nights’ by Khalid, ‘Leave Me Alone’ by Flipp Dinero & maybe even more.

Lewis Capaldi sounds more like James Arthur than James Arthur himself. I prefer Someone you Loved over Grace.

A lot of old songs got phased out but there still remains older songs in the chart. Guess it will take a few more weeks before it is filled mostly with newer songs.

Funny you said that, because I almost mentioned how similar Lewis Capaldi sounds to James Arthur in my review.
I think a lot of people are still streaming 2018's biggest hits, hence why 'One Kiss' & '2002' got big gains. I believe if a song on ACR has a 50% or more gain in overall performance, it is removed from ACR for three weeks, but I'm not certain on that.

I find it interesting how Mr. Brightside is still in the charts for the second week in a row. 205 weeks in total ?!

That really comes to how much it is played at: parties, clubs & disco, hence why it always has the streams to chart even with ACR against it.
What's more interesting is that it initially debuted at #10 in 2004 then dropped out of the Top 100 in just six weeks, yet 15 years later, it's the longest charting song of all-time in the UK!

The melody you are speaking about in the Chris Brown song is the melody of a singer called Shanice and a track called 'I love your smile' think it was from the early 90s great track.

Yeah - this highlights the bonkers nature of streaming charts! Had streaming never happened, Mr. Brightside would have been remembered as a moderate hit from the 2000s. Instead, you could argue it's the most popular chart song of the 21st century!

Hmm... I haven't heard the song in full yet, so I'm not sure to be honest, although I did find the hook to be very annoying unfortunately. Hopefully the rest of the it will be good though since I noticed it was on your list of favourite songs in the charts when we spoke last week.

Hey Piran! I love seeing 'Sweet but Pyscho' get a 3rd week at #1, but sadly it did fall on streams this week, so it could only have 2 weeks left at #1 if it continues to fall. 'Wow.' could be the next #1 if/when it gets an official video, since it's been #3 on Spotify and #2 on Apple Music for the past week. 'Dancing With a Stranger' could also reach #1 if it climbs over the next couple of weeks, with a strong debut at #6 on Spotify.
'18HUNNA' is by far my favourite debut this week, so I'm glad that it was the biggest debut of the week and gets Dave his 2nd Top 10 hit! For me, the track would be a strong 8/10. 'Undecided' is also a pretty good debut for me, with a strong 6/10, though I am quite surprised they played it on Radio 1 given how awful of a person Chris Brown is. They've pretty much blacklisted XXXTENTACION and 6ix9ine because of their actions, so I'm surprised they haven't done the same to Chris Brown. 'Options' is only a light 5/10 for me, while 'Grace' would get a solid 6/10. The former of those definitely had Apple Music to credit for its debut - it's currently #9 there.
It's really interesting that 'Lost Without You' climbs back to #9 this week, since it's now only the 4th ever single to have 4 separate runs in the Top 10 in the same chart run. The first was 'Stranger on the Shore' by Acker Bilk in 1961, and it remained the only track to do it until 2010 with Adele's 'Make You Feel My Love'. Yet last week 'Sunflower' became the 3rd and this week 'Lost Without You' becomes the 4th.
Next week it looks like there will be a string of pretty big debuts, with 'Dancing With a Stranger', 'Giant' and 'Lost in the Fire' all looking good for Top 20 debuts. 'Longshot' by Catfish and the Bottlemen also looks set to blast into the Top 20, currently #10 on Spotify, though only #46 on Apple Music. It's going to be a pretty exciting week by the looks of it!

Hey Gameskiller! How's your weekend been? :)
As you probably know by now, any week at #1 for 'Sweet But Psycho' is good news for me! I don't really see it getting a recovery on streaming in the next couple of weeks either, but is a 27,000 combined sales lead enough to keep it ahead of all competition even if it did get hit by ACR? That's a relatively huge lead & remember that it's still dominant on sales & YouTube too. As we've discussed before, ACR only affects streaming.
Right now, 'Dancing With A Stranger' & 'Giant' are looking likely to get Top 10 debuts on Friday unless them somehow crash during the week. I'm surprised how well that new Catfish & The Bottlemen track is doing, but I don't think it'll last on either Spotify nor Apple to get a Top 40 debut unfortunately, especially in the former where it's already down to #26 there!
'Sunflower' probably went back into the Top 10 a couple of weeks back due to all the Christmas songs dropping out, then it came back in again due to the new Spider-Man film gaining traction & that being the lead single from its soundtrack. With 'Lost Without You', I'm putting that down to consistently good sales & the fact that Capital or Heart radio won't stop playing it, also that it's huge in adverts at the moment.
As for the new songs breaking into the chart this week, '18HUNNA' is the only one I see sticking around for a little while.

It turns out that even before streaming was implemented into the charts, 'Mr Brightside' had already been in the Top 100 for 111 weeks! I believe it was last in the Top 40 in early 2014, so you could suggest that its sales success has been just as consistent!

If 'Sweet but Psycho' had been on ACR this week, it would've had a chart sale of 39,916, putting it a measly 844 sales behind 'thank u, next' and dropping it to #2. In 3 weeks both of those singles will most likely be on ACR (the latter has already been declining in sales for 4 straight weeks, but the overall dip of 14% in the market the week after Christmas, and the fact that only streams count towards ACR now, meant that all tracks had to do to reset their ACR clock was have their streams decrease by less than 14%), so that really just paves the way for 'Wow.', 'Nothing Breaks Like a Heart', 'Sunflower', 'Dancing With a Stranger' or something new to take the top spot in 3 weeks' time.
I think 'Dancing With a Stranger' and 'Giant' will have Top 10 debuts, but even if they don't crash it may not be certain. Both tracks are doing comparatively badly on Apple Music, with 'Giant' debuting at #18 and 'Dancing With a Stranger' debuting at #23. On the other hand, '18HUNNA' climbed to #3 on Apple Music despite it dropping to #16 on Spotify, 'Options' climbed to #5 on Apple Music despite it dropping to #29 on Spotify and 'Gun Lean' climbed to #17 on Apple Music despite it only being at #45 on Spotify. It'll be really interesting to see whether the fact that all Apple Music streams are on the 100:1 ratio or the larger overall market share of Spotify will have a larger impact.

This is the reason why I feel the chart should revise its rule again. I don't mind seeing some of these old songs in the list for a few weeks but I would hate if they overstay in the charts.
