I hope "Tokyo Nights" by Digital Farm Animals gets promoted, it's such a good song! It sounds like a mix between "Paris" by The Chainsmokers and "Midnight City" by M83. This song better become a breakout hit, it's got potential!

Nice to see These Days at No.1 ... finally. Surprised FRIENDS didn't rise further.

I would like to see Sofia Reyes feat. Jason Derulo & De La Ghetto get some airplay and streaming with their Spanish/English song 1,2,3. Very catchy and would probably do well in the UK as did Despacito.

"These Days" is finally #1 and dethroned "God's Plan" after so many difficult weeks at #2! It's about time a good song topped the chart. So please, no more overrated hip-hop/trap songs.

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

- ‘These Days’ finally rises to the top spot after being stuck in the runner-up position for seven weeks! It’s becomes: Rudimental’s third, Jess Glynne’s sixth, Macklemore’s second & Dan Caplen’s first #1 single in the UK!

- This means that Jess Glynne has passed Cheryl to claim the most #1 singles by a British solo female artist of all-time! She ties Britney Spears for the fourth most #1s overall & the three artists that have made more visits to the top of the charts are: Madonna with 13, Rihanna with nine & Kylie Minogue with seven.

- As ‘God’s Plan’ by Drake slides 1-10 under the new 300:1 streaming to sales ratio, it sees the biggest fall from the top of the charts since ‘A Bridge Over You’ by the Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Choir (which was Christmas #1 in 2015) fell 1-29.

- ‘Feel It Still’ by Portugal. The Man is #1 on the radio airplay chart for a third non-consecutive week.

- The highest new entry this week comes from Shawn Mendes, as ‘In My Blood’ (which is the first of two new singles of his to be released last Friday) makes its Official Chart debut at #13! So for as much as his music has divided many critics’ opinions, I was actually really looking forward to his comeback; he might not be the best singer in the charts right now & there are some production choices of his team that I don’t agree with, but he generally shows a lot of maturity for somebody that’s only 19 years old! With this, yeah, I actually like it a lot! The blocky percussion might not match the acoustic groove brilliantly, but I really love that this sees Shawn Mendes have some intensity in his voice that could almost be regarded as arena rock if the guitars were a little stronger. What I respected a lot were the lyrics, were Shawn Mendes discusses how he tries to break out of the trap of anxiety & expresses about how that’s not who he is, it’s not in his blood. Most of his hit singles have taken a while or at least several listens to grow on me, but this connected to me after I first heard it. It deserved to debut inside the Top 10 at least, but I see it getting more traction on the charts over time!

- The other Shawn Mendes single in the chart this week is ‘Lost In Japan’, making its debut at #30 today. Another thing I think about Shawn Mendes is that he seems to use the same formula with his music, meaning that his ballads or break-up anthems were decent for the most part, but I lost interest every time he released a new song. That said, ‘Lost In Japan’ is the surprise from him that we certainly needed & a good sign for his next album! That’s because it sees him step out of his comfort zone to try funk & there are a lot of instrumental elements that come together so well here, such as the: quicksilver grooves, acoustic guitar rakes, audible bass guitar & even a pleasant piano intro! I’m also definitely liking that synth wobble that accents the base; probably the best production work from Teddy Geiger I’ve heard so far! That said, a couple of the vocal issues still remain; I don’t deny that his falsetto was way better than expected, reminding me a lot of what JT is capable of, but Shawn Mendes sounds significantly more boring in the verses, which kind of dampers the fun mood, but at least he’s trying to sing this gracefully with romantic tension, without sounding too desperate until near the end. Overall, I could see this doing extremely well on the radio & it’s good to hear him attempt something different, but I wouldn’t mind if he makes more music like this. Good stuff!

- Following the release of his second studio album called ‘Staying At Tamara’s’, George Ezra debuts another song inside the Top 40 as ‘Shotgun’ enters at #35, without significant promotion or official video. That said, I see the appeal for this in itself to place it inside the Top 40! One of the features of the album in general, not just this song, it that George Ezra can bring an infectious bounce to the track, especially the washed-out, ramshackle guitar flutters we get here & thankfully there’s enough charisma in the vocals to drive some momentum into this, although the lyrics come dangerously close to reminding me of a check-list. That said, for a song that craves the head rush of a travelling adventure without going into too much detail, this isn’t bad, although I think there are better songs on that album that could be pushed as singles.

- Finally, ‘Vroom’ by Yxng Bane lifts 45-40 to become his second solo Top 40 appearance. I’ll be honest, I was a little bit ambivalent going into this, because while grime as a whole has been growing on me significantly over the past year, I wasn’t a fan of ‘Rihanna’ at all. However, his part on ‘Bestie’ was fine, so could he do okay on this too? You know, I’d say he does even better than just okay! Yeah, his rap isn’t exactly easy to comprehend in either verse, but I definitely like the cheerful tropical beat & a flow that shows a Caribbean & Latino inspiration & I also think that adding a female backing singer over the hook harmonising with Yxng Bane’s vocals really well & even his singing is the best I’ve heard it so far! Yeah, the content being about cars & girls has been far too overused recently meaning that this doesn’t stand out enough to be a really good song, but it’s one of the more electrifying blends of afrobeat & UK underground I’ve heard so far in 2018. It’s certainly decent, but it’s nothing ground-breaking or notably fascinating within the subgenre.

- On the albums chart, George Ezra gets his second #1 album with ‘Staying At Tamara’s’. Selling 63,000 across sales & streaming metrics this past week, it’s the biggest debut for any album released this year so far!

- The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘The Greatest Showman OST’ (1-2), ‘÷’ by Ed Sheeran (2-3), ‘Over & Out’ by Rick Parfitt of Status Quo (debuts at #4) & ‘Boarding House Reach’ by Jack White (debuts at #5).

- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could be entering the Top 40 for the first time: 'You Are The Reason' by Calum Scott, 'Done For Me' by Charlie Puth ft Kehlani, ‘Mad Love’ by Sean Paul & David Guetta ft Becky G, ‘Be Careful’ by Cardi B, a couple of tracks from The Weeknd’s surprise new album & maybe even more.

- Elsewhere, I love seeing ‘Freaky Friday’ & ‘Lullaby’ enter the Top 10, but hopefully ‘Meant To Be’ can enter the region next week!

Hey Piran! I love seeing Jess Glynne getting the record for most #1 singles by a British female solo artist, but I would've liked George Ezra to get his first #1 single more. I don't feel These Days is quite as good as Rudimental's previous songs, and I got bored of it fairly quickly. But still great to see British acts doing well!

God's Plan dropped less than I thought it would, as it was looking likely it would be #11 or #12 in the midweek update, but it being #10 has blocked Meant To Be from the top 10! I have to admit, it has grown on me quite a bit and I hope it does go top 10 next week.

I like seeing 'These Days' finally climb to #1 this week, but I do have to point out that it is not the true #1 single. If not for the 300:1 rule, 'God's Plan' would've had a minuscule lead of just 51 sales to keep its position at #1. Even though I do think that 'God's Plan' should be #1 as I don't agree with the 300:1 rule, it is good to finally see a change at #1. 'These Days' won't be getting hit with the 300:1 ratio too soon though, as its sales increased this week from around 42,000 to just over 43,000.

I also like seeing a change at #1 on the albums chart, though I don't think that 'Staying At Tamara's' will get another week at #1. 'The Greatest Showman' will likely reclaim the spot next week as 'My Dear Melancholy,' has already dropped to #3 on iTunes, behind 'The Greatest Showman' and 'NOW 99'. While 'My Dear Melancholy,' will likely do very well on streaming, the fact that it's only got 6 tracks means that it has half as many tracks counting towards the chart as an album with 12 or more tracks, and just over half of 'The Greatest Showman's 11 tracks. I don't think that 'My Dear Melancholy,' has a physical release either, so the best I can see for it is Top 5.

EDIT: I was right, 'My Dear Melancholy,' did extremely well on streaming, but my point still stands. All 6 tracks debuted in the Top 22 on Spotify, with the highest being 'Call Out My Name' at #2 with 488k streams. However, this is nothing compared to the effects globally or in the US. Globally all tracks debuted in the Top 12, including 5 in the Top 10 and 'Call Out My Name' at #1 with 6.5m streams, and in the US all tracks debuted in the Top 8, including the entire Top 3, led by 'Call Out My Name' with 3.5m streams. The only tracks stopping them from having complete in the US are 'God's Plan', which, for the first time since its debut, isn't #1 as it drops to #4, and 'Psycho', which, for the first time since its debut, isn't #2 as it drops to #7.

'My Dear Melancholy,' racked up a total of just over 1.75m streams on Spotify on its first day in the UK, while it got just under 25m streams on Spotify globally and over 14m streams on Spotify in the US.

If it manages to keep up its streams, 'My Dear Melancholy,' will undoubtedly have 3 Top 40 hits next week, and 'Call Out My Name' should easily reach the Top 10 despite poor sales (currently #31 on iTunes).

I'm really glad to see 'In My Blood' and 'Lost In Japan' have the 2 highest debuts, though I am a bit disappointed that 'In My Blood' didn't manage to reach the Top 10. I don't know if I can see it ever reaching the region, considering it has dropped significantly on sales and streams since its debut last week. 'Vroom' is also a pretty good song, so I'm glad to see that reach the Top 40.

Hey Ted! Happy Easter. :)
I personally prefer 'These Days' a little more than 'Paradise' (although the former isn't Rudimental's best song as you said), but it's good to see the latter do well & it could definitely be a future #1 if streaming picks up for it a little more.
'Meant To Be' has been growing on me a lot too & yeah, it would be good to finally see a country song in the Top 10 again!

Yeah, I'm happy to see 'These Days' finally reach the top spot too, but I don't feel like it's genuine either. It seems so unfair that a song that 'God's Plan' is still doing well on streaming, but gets shoved down nine spots because it's been on the charts for 10 weeks now. It means that while this rule is still in place, we could end up getting a lot of songs spending nine weeks at #1.
I agree that 'Call Out My Name' could manage a low Top 10 debut in the UK (it's expected to enter at #2 on the Hot 100 in the US for the week after next).

The 300:1 rule affected 'Shape of You' pretty heavily as well. I don't know anything for sure, but looking at its positions over the weeks it could quite possibly have been enjoying its 64th straight week as a Top 40 single this week. At the very least it would've had 51 straight weeks and 58 weeks in total. But instead it has to settle with 42 straight weeks and 49 weeks in total.
I really hope that 'Call Out My Name' manages a Top 10 debut next week. When I made my chart on Saturday it was heading for a #3 debut, but right now it's very likely that it will debut straight in at #1! There were also 4 songs from 'My Dear Melancholy,' in the Top 10 on my update, but now it looks like all 6 songs from it will debut in the Top 10! 'My Dear Melancholy,' is very easily my 2nd favourite album of 2018 so far, beating out 'Black Panther: The Album' and 'Diamond In The Dirt', and I'd probably put it as my 3rd favourite album of all time right now, though that is very subject to change.

I'm now expecting big change in the Top 10 this week! Taking ACR into account with God's Plan, Freaky Friday is currently the most streamed song on Spotify with over 400,000 streams, and it isn't doing too badly in downloads either- so it could very well end up being #1 by Friday!
Paradise has slipped a little in streams, so I'm not sure it will claim #1, especially with Freaky Friday doing so well.
This Is Me has made a massive gain in downloads and streams after being used in The Real Full Monty: Ladies Night, and will potentially rise a few places.
The Weeknd's Call Out My Name isn't doing very well in downloads, but is just behind Freaky Friday on streams so I'm expecting it to debut in the Top 10.
I'm hoping Meant To Be sneaks into the Top 10 amongst all this, but who knows.

Yeah, it's been a very exciting past couple of days for the charts, but because of the Easter Monday holiday, we won't know who's leading the race until tomorrow night.
'These Days' seems the most consistent out of all of those songs though, so I think that'll just manage a second week at the top. 'Paradise' will probably drop as the hype of the release of 'Staying At Tamara's' fades & like 'This Is Me', streaming is decent, but not enough to be a #1 contender in my opinion.
I will say that I see 'Freaky Friday' being at least #2 when the chart is revealed, but even though radio doesn't directly effect the Official Charts, I don't see it getting a lot of airplay due to the content. That said, it would be hysterical to see Lil Dicky have a #1 hit! :P

Sorry for the late reply, but my Easter was great, thank you! Now that the update has been released by the OCC, I'm very surprised that This Is Me is on course to reach #1! Like I mentioned in my other reply, I was expecting it to go up a few places thanks to Real Full Monty, but not that high! This makes the race for #1 even more interesting, as the gap between it and These Days is very small, and Freaky Friday is not too far behind either.

Concerning radioplay for Freaky Friday- I've heard Freaky Friday a fair bit on Capital, but not much on Radio 1, although throughout Easter Weekend numerous Greatest Hits specials took up a lot of the days. Overall the song is censored quite a bit, but not as bad as I thought it would be, as unlike other clean versions where explicit words are simply muted, cleaner ones have actually been dubbed in- e.g. 'S**t's real weak' is now 'This is real weak' and 'What up my n***a' is now 'What up my winna', so it still makes some sense.

I'm still hoping for Paradise to pull through but it's not looking likely. I want a fairly new song at #1, like Freaky Friday, but These Days and This Is Me have been in the Top 10 for over 10 weeks now! At this rate, I can't see any completely new song at #1 until the Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa is released, which I'm thinking will go straight in at the top, it will be massive.
