John Newman will fall the same way Conor Maynard did, Maynard had a string of top 10 singles and a no 1 album, his last single didn't make the top 200. All UK acts have a sell by date now as far as the chart is concerned, there used to be loyalty but then again the charts used to be fairer anyway. And half the lower end of the charts are full of songs that have spent over 50 weeks in the chart, many around 100 weeks, the killers mr brightside no 84 in the chart, really? Anyone planning to get into the charts may as well pack up now

I just don't get it. Add The Vamps, Lawson and someone else to these two and you will get my favourite British artists...and everyone of them just flopped the same way in the UK, a couple of top 10 hits and then just goes nowhere.

J

He's got Calvin Harris writing his songs and producing them tho which Conor Maynard didn't get! I think Calvin H desperately wants to help keep things going for JN cos, essentially, he's good mates with him (and prob on the same label. I don't know). His new single Ole is pretty different, I really like it, & I have a feeling it will do well and it might just save his career.

I agree but I'm not complaining about Mr Brightside being in at all. Great song.

A petition should be made that yes a streaming chart should exist but the sales chart should be the official chart, the sales chart is fresh and songs move about and that is how it should be. This graveyard of a chart that is more boring than watching paint dry must end. I don't know them but when viola beach can get a top 15 single in the sales chart that gets to number 50, pet shop boys a 44 in sales gets to 123 it is abysmal and wholly inaccurate, but we live in a world of injustice so our chart purely reflects that and there are injustices that go on in the chart on a weekly basis, this week Britney Spears last week Olly Mars.

some advice if you care about Bryan Adam's record and you want to see an end to an end to One Dance's reign at the top spot go buy and stream the out of Major Lazer's new song Cold Water featuring Justin Bieber and do the same with Perfect Strangers by Jonas Blue

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

I don't care about Bryan Adam's record but I am bored to death of One Dance and it doesn't deserve to break the record.

There is just one possibility to Drake rise your reign: A video for "One Dance" in this week. If he don't drop it, he won't pass the 16th week on the top because of the Major Lazer's song.

The video bears no relation to your comment whatsoever. The reason people are streaming the song to such extent is down to the fact that there's no official video on YouTube! It won't even make an ounce of difference if his video was leaked online.

everyone getting worked up over 'One Dance' these last few weeks/months has been hilarious! loving it, welcome to the age of streaming folks

Major Lazer is sure to hit #1 next week anyway so you guys can rest easy now lol

If you're happy and content with a stagnant, barely-moving chart that's quite odd. Wouldn't yu prefer a vibrant, unpredictable chart?

avatar

This will be the first year in chart history without a number one from a British act. The charts are more Americanized now.

Hi John. Two British artists have hit Number 1 this year! Zayn with Pillowtalk, and Kyla who features on Drake's One Dance.

I'd like to see a song like this hit number one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6-dehZq-t4

Catfish And The Bottlemen - Heathrow

That's not the original version but very similar. It's a moody song. We need to see more variety in the charts - not just r and b pop or dance music.

Streamers of the world unite - stream Catfish And The Bottlemen - Heathrow! Let's get rid of Drake's One Love!

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

2

AM I the only one who doesn't care about Bryan Adams' record being broken, but still would hate it if One Dance breaks it? Because it's boring the out of me AND it was only no.1 in sales for 2-3 weeks so it don't deserve it.

The charts r past a joke now

Okay seeing Drake at 1 is what I predicted but Olly Murs at #34? Come on guys, get that song 33 places higher.

Whoever makes a song boasting about their fame definitely deserves a flop, you sound like a little kid, please look round and educate yourself in some real music, instead of copying lines of a song in a comment from the likes of mindless materialistic egotists like Meghan trashnor, no we don't want to be like you thank you very much you frightful woman, take your meaningless clichéd schoolkid biased feminist undertoned music elsewhere please, thanks, she is dam gorgeous though she can have that one

avatar

its just your opinión, this song is just for having fun or about acceptation, everything depends of your perspective... ;) happy weekend bitter man.

C

well thanks I will:), not bitter at all my friend:)

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

It deserves a flop alright. If Olly Murs, John Newman flop out it will be a kick to the sack if Me Too is a hit,

avatar

James England

The next few weeks are gonna be interesting. Can Drake's One Dance become the longest running number one in chart history? I believe it's possible. According to Spotify's UK chart - One Dance has close to 100,000 more streams than the next song at number 2 (which is another Drake song!).

Unless a new song appears and wows enough people, I think we're stuck with Drake, Drake and more Drake.

Great. :P

Currently Major Lazer is above One Dance in the Spotify Charts. On the big top 40 Major Lazer has already after 2 days of sales.

What is going on with John Newman??? Especially the Sigala track - brilliant summer anthem.

Hello, anyone there, the chart died ages ago. Ed sheeran spends a year in top 40, now this. THE CHART IS DEAD

C

chartwatcher

2

At least Ed Sheeran's music is organic and true and he put's a lot of effort in to touring much rather see him than fetty or drake and fake gangster school kid materialistic music at least the guy is genuine if anything

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

0

Ed Sheeran spending a year in the top 40 a bad thing????

avatar

Edward Sallas

3

-One Dance isn't a horrible song per se, but it is so good that it warrants FIFTEEN WEEKS at #1? Errr...no. The fact that it has spent so long at the summit is baffling to say the least. It's a fairly generic r'n'b tune.

-Katy Perry's new song is awful. Someone should tell her to not bother with this self-empowerment anthems because they're always so cringey and cliched.

-Why did Sigala and John Newman underperform so badly? That song is a brilliant summer anthem! Especially when you consider that godawful 'Don't Let Me Down managed a #2 spot. The singer sound slike she's trying hard to copy Rihanna. Horrible.

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

I agree with all that. I don't HATE Katy's new song but it's pretty bad. John Newman double-flops with another single that couldn't even make the 100 while Chainsmokers hit number TWO? Yes I'd rather that be no.1 than Drake but it shows people have limited taste

avatar

BreakTheMachine

0

Katy Perry's song is supposed to be about the Olympics. It contains the line "victory is in your veins". Enough said!

C

chartwatcher

1

Is it just me or are an awful lot of people flopping lately here

DH

David Hodgson

1

Any established artist from Britney to Olly Murs and literally any UK "pop" act from the Vamps to Lawson to Nathan Sykes to Bastille just bombs; the failure of John Newman is the most surprising; have tastes really changed in such a short time? Aside from a few UK dance acts and international acts like Adele and Coldplay, UK based pop music is now extinct from the charts for the first time in chart history - totally bizarre

avatar

Painmix King

0

Tastes haven't changed. Just try and get a concert ticket for any of the acts you've mentioned. Not easy, just goes to show that the chart nowaday's does not reflect the taste of the nation. So is a complete waste of time

C

chartwatcher

0

John Newman failed cos the song was credited to him only and not Calvin and released through John's label and the song was flat meaningless to any one but Calvin and under produced only John Newman's great reggae voice made it good

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

0

I think he means Give Me Your Love in terms of JN.

C

chartwatcher

0

maybe but at least John Newman saw the top ten again with "Give Me Your Love" and it is his first top ten this year and it was released under Sigala's label Olé was released under Island and surprise it flopped just like Revolve and its singles also released under Island if I were John I'd add Calvin Harris feat. John Newman then release it through Calvin's label same as blame and it'd sore in the top five without a doubt

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

0

Yeah, very true. John will basically never have a big song as the lead artist again I predict

C

chartwatcher

0

Sadly yeah but I reckon he could if he changed record labels he is clearly second priority to the "trendy kids" at island which is a shame cos he is a true talent and writes his own material he embarrasses all the other song's around him when he chart's high but all is not lost olé may do well in the US hope it does he deserves it for his good work

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

0

He writes his own stuff? O_O. I doubt Ole will chart even in the top 300 in the US though.

C

chartwatcher

0

it may be a top 20 at least keep getting these two numbers asscociated with it in my mind when i think of it and the US charts 14 and 11 i have a feeling about thing's sometimes 14 is a common entry for british artists in the US as it is lol and the media storm surrounding the song possibly being about Taylor Swift should be enough to fuel it in to at least the top 20 i'd say really and yeah he does cool stuff

avatar

mildredfarts

13

if he matches Bryan Adams for longest consecutive run then i officially lose interest in the charts altogether. 7 non movers in the top 10 and some of the best songs barely moving upwards or going the opposite direction. i don't believe history is 'being made' i believe it is being rewritten just so it suits todays trends, anything post 2005/6 should be classed as digital era and any achievements made in that time should be new achievements and not comparable with pre 2005.

C

chartwatcher

2

Agreed streaming has cheated all those records

avatar

arsemonkey147

0

Here here. it was that time the idea of a"singles chart" ceased to matter.

avatar

Pekka Sahlberg

2

I go through the SALES chart these days. It´s the REAL chart!!!

avatar

I.B.

0

Major Lazer will be number one on Fri as it's narrowly behind Drake in the streaming charts.

avatar

Pekka Sahlberg

0

As I said look at the SALES chart from now on. NO STREAMING included. JUST SALES!!!!!!

avatar

Piran

2

So here is my usual review for the UK charts this week:
- Congratulations once again to Drake for a 15th consecutive week at #1 on the singles chart with 'One Dance'. He may equal Wet Wet Wet's 'Love Is All Around' for the second longest consecutive #1 song of all-time, but I just don't believe 'One Dance' will be a memorable song in many years to come, unlike the ones from Wet Wet Wet & Bryan Adams. 'One Dance' still has great streaming especially from Spotify & the discount from iTunes gave it a boost in downloads as well this week. So unless 'Cold Water' by Major Lazer & Justin Bieber debuts at #1 next week, I think Drake may be in with a chance with the record (which would slightly annoy me).
- At least Shawn Mendes earned his 3rd Top 10 single today (if you count 'Oh Cecilia' with The Vamps). The new entries are amazing but they are so much lower down than I thought they would be... I mean 'Rise' at #25 & 'Make Me' only at #42?? I really hope Katy & Britney climb soon & I also love the new Zayn & 5SOS entries as well.
- Elsewhere in the Top 40, MO's 'Final Song' & Christine & The Queen's 'Tilted' are amongst the biggest climbers & I really hope that they continue to rise next week. So an average week overall, but it's not the quality of the songs that are poor, it's the lack of change in the UK charts over the last few weeks. I don't mind who is #1 next week or what song, just as long as it's not 'One Dance'. I like the song, but it's getting really boring now. -_-

C

chartwatcher

3

Congratulations? Save some cake for someone else Drake, "Perfect Strangers" deserves the top spot and still no sign of olé by John Newman wow flop

avatar

Edward Sallas

0

Perfect Strangers sounds like a Years & Years knock-off imo. And not a particularly good one.

C

chartwatcher

0

Lol Jonas Blue is another sigala using guest vocalist's to his beats all I know is I'd rather that be number one so Bryan Adams keeps his record at least

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

0

If Lean On fails #1 that their new song has NO chance

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

0

Okay on second thoughts that may not be the case

avatar

I.B.

4

Look at the difference between this and the Scottish charts: One Dance is further down the chart and it's highest peak position was #2! Explain that?! This is a complete travesty and the joke is wearing thin now. Drake has to go!

M

Matt

0

I suspect that for whatever reason, Spotify can't differentiate Scotland and none of its data is used in the Scottish charts, otherwise it would look largely similar to the UK Chart.

C

chartwatcher

1

Maybe spotify are fixing the figures purposefully to beat Bryan Adam's charting record

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

Or because they're Drake fanboys
