“Eminem is a walking moral panic in the fine tradition of Alice Cooper, the Sex Pistols or the Beastie Boys, and he has ignited the ire of feminists, gay rights groups and Moby. His recorded versions of real-life conflicts with his mother and his (now ex-) wife have repeatedly landed him in court... Nevertheless, Eminem is a pop star. He plays, primarily, to a pop audience rather than to hardcore gangstas or bigots. The same barely teenage pop audience which supports Steps or Atomic Kitten will turn out to see Eminem wielding his Texas chainsaw in a Hannibal Lecter hockey mask, happily chanting along with his lyrics."
